Maybelline vs. Stila Liquid Eyeliner

Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner

Price: Around $22

This Stila eyeliner is by far one of the brand’s most popular items, and it’s also one of my most re-purchased high-end makeup products. The application of this eyeliner couldn’t be smoother; it effortlessly glides across your skin with zero pulling or smudging, all while leaving behind an incredibly pigmented black line that can easily be built up or kept razor thin, depending on your preferences.

This product really does last all day, and it’s the perfect thing to use when you want to add a bolder touch to transition your look from day to evening (especially since it won’t budge, even during your wildest nights).

And in this corner: Maybelline Eye Studio Master Precise Liquid Eyeliner

Price: Around $5-7

I was blown away with this product the first time I used it. Out of all the drugstore liquid liners I’ve tried, this Maybelline liner is by far the absolute best one I’ve ever owned. When compared to other similarly-priced liners, the pigmentation and lasting power is unreal, plus the application is really smooth due to the brush design.

Unlike other drugstore liners, which I’ve noticed feature brushes that are more like a fine point marker, the bush on this Maybelline liner is like a paint brush. This means it’s much more flexible, and allows you to create more precise and effortless lines and wings.

The Champion: It’s a tie!

These two eyeliners are honestly so similar that it’s nearly impossible to pick which one is better. I wore each liner on a different eye the other day, and the only difference I noticed between the two was that the Maybelline liner gave me a raccoon eye after I took a shower, while the Stila liner only faded slightly afterwards.

So, if waterproof eyeliner is really a make-or-break quality in your decision, and you’re willing to spend a little extra money on your makeup, then you might want to consider purchasing the Stila liner. However, if you aren’t a mermaid, then the budget-friendly Maybelline liner should work just fine.

Benefit Cosmetics Brow Kit

Eyebrows are still one of the hottest trends and probably will be for a while. People are crazy for defined and clean looking brows! There are many different techniques for getting your brows exactly how you want them and will probably take a little bit of practice before you perfect them to your liking.  But don’t lose hope because once you perfect them your face will be transformed! There are many different brow products; pencils, pomades, powders, etc. I’m excited about the new Benefit brow line that allows you to achieve the perfect brow. The Benefit Ka-Brow is a pomade that is packaged with its own little angle brush. This product is used to define the edges of your brows to get the desired shape with a clean crisp line. You can use this with virtually any brow type to clean up the face and make your brows really stand out! To fill any gaps in the brow I like using pencils. A pencil gives you the control to make hair-like movements for a natural looking brow. The Benefit Goof Proof Brow pencil is a double-sided pencil with a spooley on the other end, which makes the process of filling and blending the brow a little faster! To finish off the brow I use a setting gel to lock in all of the hairs that might want to move through out the day. Benefit’s Gimmie Brow is a tinted gel that not only locks the brows into place but also gives them a little extra color (it can be used to lighten or darken your brows depending on the shade).  With these 4 products your brows are on their way to being perfect!

Pros & Cons of Being a Makeup Artist

I am always receiving emails from aspiring make-up artists and even professional make-up artists on how they can get into this industry – On my tips and more! It’s very hard to get back to everyone and explain about this industry and what direction they can go into. So it got me thinking to do a blog post on some of my tips and pros and cons of being a make-up artist which I hope it can help many of you!

New student makeup artist dream! Is it successful social and professional life? If it is so, then what a makeup artist should do to achieve professional success? The answer is easy: to choose a profession that you are interested in and have a massive passion for. However, among this profession it can be tough and require a lot of efforts. Here are some of my pros and cons of becoming a professional makeup artist from my experience.

A professional makeup artist is highly demanded and is becoming more and more popular career choice, I do think a lot of this is due to how easy the job can look! Well don’t be fooled by this. Makeup artists may work for some organization such as myself for Make-up Academy or take on freelance work. It’s very similar to profession of an artist as it is very creative and interesting and something different and new every day. However, there are a lot of cons and pros that new make-up artists don’t realize until they try to pursue the career.

  • It is very easy to take on this career.  It only takes one to two years to study to be able to work or even take short courses; Of course, my top tip is you should never stop learning!! As you need to keep your make-up trends fresh and there are always new skills and techniques to learn
  • You have the most exciting thing as a make-up artist which allows you to express your creativity and to put any crazy idea into practice which I love doing the most!
  • You get to meet new people, visiting new places and what is more exciting, working with celebrities and travelling abroad. I would of never said I would be travelling with my career and the last year I have visited some amazing places whilst doing what I love
  • We get to see the results of our work immediately which in my eyes brings a satisfaction to see happy clients face and the best part from a photo shoot/music video is when you get the makeup images in your email box this is then a chance to show of your skills to the world(which is a real important thing as a makeup artist)

  • The competition between makeup artists is so high at the moment, so my tip is to be really assertive and creative and get yourself noticed and be on top of these two areas
  • There is no working schedule, so a makeup artist may be asked to work even at night and very long hours and if you start to moan to clients about this, you maybe not been seen as professional and in some cases never be hired again.
  • There may be problems with regular work so keep on the go and always network. Never have a day of doing nothing! I have nothing going on I will either be blogging, emailing and even playing with new make-up techniques on myself. I have been seen to show this a lot to my followers and I ensure you it pays off.

My final thoughts and tips on how to become a successful makeup artist:

I always tell other aspiring make-up artists to assist local makeup artists & get as much work experience as you can! You see the good, bad and everything that way then.

The beauty of working with Make-up is, it’s constantly changing with trends, products, seasons and having skills like myself within teaching, fashion, photography, media & theater you can choose any career path at any time which will keep your skills and techniques fresh with the on-going changes of makeup. Keep your options open and learn everything aspect of make-up you can. I would say the best advice for you now is working for free, which has given me experience working as a freelance make-up artist.

Meeting some amazing creative people and finally to build a portfolio which I am now happy to show clients. I ensure you this has open up a lot of doors to my makeup world and I have learned so much… your contacts grow and grow. I choose to work for free to build my experience within the make-up industry and to gain a strong portfolio. I do believe that all trainee makeup artists should only work for free if it benefits their portfolio/experiences and they gain something out of it. Unpaid work comes from particular photographers that I feel their work is outstanding and knowing with my skills we could produce some strong images for both our portfolios. So therefore we are returning favors in both parts. So I have now had a handful of collaborations with different photographers, and my work really has grown as a result. I was able to be comfortable with them and try new things, and saw results. Each photographer I worked with on tests moved my work in a different direction and I am grateful to all of them. I would say my confidence, skills and knowledge within this industry is at a very high level now and I would say that is all thanks to working UN paid and meeting some amazing inspirational people along the way who believed in my abilities. After all if I didn’t do this I wouldn’t be where I am today, getting paid jobs.

Everyday Beauty Questions

What is the best makeup for oily skin?

Oily skin is tough to deal with especially in the summer.  My fix:  oil free primer and Make Up For Ever HD foundation powder.I know Mary Kay has a good mattifier, and I like Bare Escentuals foundation as it soaks up all the extra oil.  Keep blotting sheets with you for touch ups throughout the day.

Should you match your eyeshadow color to your clothes?

NO!  If you’re wearing a green shirt, don’t wear green eyeshadow- it’s too matchy matchy.  Instead, choose something that is opposite on the color wheel.  My biggest tip:  the brighter the clothes, the more neutral color the makeup- this doesn’t mean you need to do a simple look… You can wear a dramatic look if you have a bright pink top on, but go with a black smokey eye or a brown smudged look instead of something with color.  If you are wearing black, brown, or another neutral, then go with a brighter color for the eyes or lips for that “pop”.

How do I cover up acne?

Use concealer that is 1-2 shades darker than your skin.  If you use a light concealer, it’s only going to enhance the acne instead of actually hiding it.  The trick is to blend around the edges or apply foundation over the concealer to smooth out the color difference.  If you have redness from the acne, use a green concealer as it counteracts redness- you do need to apply foundation on top though so you don’t look like Kermit….

My favorite concealers:   Coastal Scents Camo Quad,  Make Up For Ever cream concealer, and Bobbi Brown Concealer (for under the eyes)

How do you do your eyebrows?

I used to take a stiff angled brow brush and matte eyeshadow around the same color as my brows and fill in.  For the blank spots, I’ll take a dry feeling brow or eyeliner pencil and do small strokes to fill in.  But, recently I’ve fallen in love with Tarte’s Brow Mousse- it’s so easy to use and so natural looking, plus it lasts all day!

I do recommend for shaping the brows that you go 4 times a year to have them professionally shaped- Makeup artist, estheticians and hair stylists do brows on a regular basis and can analyze and create a shape that suits you as each person’s face and brows are different.  Then you can just tweeze or wax in between shapings…

How can I avoid looking pale in pictures?

If you know you’re having pictures done, wear extra makeup- especially for blush, lips, and lashes as the flash will wash you out.  If you feel you have just a little too much makeup on, then it’s probably just right for pictures.

6 Eye Makeup Tips to Make Small Eyes Appear Larger and More Open

Chances are if you’re like most other women, you’ve always  wanted larger eyes. While we can’t change our genetic make up, the good news is  we can create the illusion of larger eyes with eye makeup tricks and tips. In  fact, if you’ve ever noticed a celebrity photographed without makeup you most  likely have noticed how much smaller their eyes look than their photos where  they are all dressed up and made over for most red carpet events.

Make Eyes Appear Larger With These Simple Makeup Tips

  1. Curl Your Lashes– One of the easiest secrets to utilizing eye makeup routine to correctly make your eyes look larger is to curl your eyelashes. It’s important you curl your lashes BEFORE you apply the mascara! If you forget to do it before applying your dark mascara, be sure to wait until the mascara has dried completely and then go ahead and curl them.
  2. If you find throughout the day your lashes aren’t as curled as they were in the morning when you first applied your makeup, you can always re-curl them later in the day since your mascara will be very dry by then.
  3. Apply Mascara on Your Bottom Lashes– Many women think they don’t need mascara on their bottom eye lashes. However, most makeup experts believe adding mascara to the lower lashes can help to enlarge their appearance. The trick is to know how much to use on those bottom lashes! Start by applying the mascara to the top lashes. Then, with whatever is left on your brush (without redipping it into the mascara formula), apply it to the lower lashes. Hold your brush vertically and  sweep it back and forth over the lower lashes to get the right look.
  4. False Lashes for Evening– If you want to go for a dramatic dark night time effect, you may want to try your hand at false lashes. Most celebrities do use false lashes for big events. If you know how to do the lash application properly, they can be beautiful and natural. Many larger department stores can help you learn how to apply lashes at one of their cosmetics and beauty products counters but they are also available at drugstores. Be sure to practice before your big event. You can also remember to use scissors to trim them (before applying them)if they are too long.
  5. Use White Eye Liner in the Right Places– Another technique to use involves the creamy white eye liner pencil. This can help you get a doe-eyed style that will brighten and widen your eye appearance. To get this look, simply line the lower inside of your lids with the creamy white eye       pencil.  Make sure to use a soft pencil to lessen the irritaion on your lid. You can find great liners from Sephora, Loreal or Estee Lauder. To further brighten your eye area, use this soft color also on the inside corner of both the upper and lower lids.
  6. Apply Highlight Eye Shadow– If you don’t like the idea of the white shade of liner, you can also use a platinum highlighter to open up the eye area. Simply apply your shadow as usual and then use the highlighter on small dots along your browbone just below your eyebrow. Blend it in with the shadow in that area, apply it to the inner corners of the eyes and enjoy your new look.
  7. Keep Eye Brows Plucked & Well Shaped – For larger appearing eyes, you must also pay attention to your brows. Be sure you manicure them well. It’s a great idea to visit a professional to get your brows waxed, tweezed or threaded. A pro can help you shape them properly. In between pro visits you can maintain them by tweezing. If you have a slight arch to your brows, you will find your eyes look larger.

Tips for Making Small Eyes Look Bigger

You should start by concentrating on your brows. Shape them so they don’t have the close-together appearance. Next, use a soft red-brown brow pencil or a taupe powder brow liner – don’t make the mistake of going too dark with your brow color, as this looks very unnatural and will make your skin look paler. Use eye shadow on the upper outer half of the lid extending above the eye and under the brow. To offset the closeness of the eyes, start drawing the eye line on the upper lid away from the inner corner. Draw it up and out. Similarly, the lower line should not begin from the inner corner. For your coloring, try a pale champagne for the entire lid and medium brown, kaki or plum for the crease and corner. Use brown/black eyeliner to define your eyes and smudge lightly. Finish with black mascara, making sure to use an eyelash curler first.

Shape your Eyebrows Like a Professional

Locate Your Starting Points

Flip your tweezer (try Tweezerman Slant tweezer, $20, upside down so the open end is pointing downward, and place it vertically alongside the outer edge of the bottom of your nose. The point where the vertex lands marks the beginning of your brow (which should also be about one inch above the inner corner of your eye). Using an eye pencil, draw a vertical line to demarcate the start of each brow, then check that the space above the bridge of your nose is centered between them. Remove the strays that fall in between.

1. Brush your brows upward, then use brow scissors to snip just the very ends of any long hairs and repeat brushing downward, says eyebrow pro Lashundra. Trimming the hair before tweezing will reveal the brow shape and remove the weight and bulk so that you can create an ideal shape.

2. Begin by holding a pencil parallel to the side of the bridge of your nose. The inner edge of your brows should start here. To determine the highest point of your arch, place the pencil parallel to the outside corner of your iris. Angling the pencil diagonally from your nostril to the outside corner of your eye will tell you where your brow should end. Another foolproof way to locate your arch: “Look at your face straight on in the mirror and find the highest point of your brow. Tweeze directly below it for a perfectly placed arch,” says Shun.

3. Mark the spots you just mapped out with a brow pencil, then begin tweezing or waxing accordingly. Remove no more than two rows of hair to maintain a natural effect. You may also need to remove just a few hairs from the top of the outer edges to create a subtle downward slope. If you have thick brows and want a more dramatic arch, remove an additional row from under the peak of the brow to create a more pronounced arch and to keep it from appearing straight and flat.

The shape of your eyebrows might be communicating a false message about what you’re feeling. In a study, researchers digitally altered a photo of a woman’s face to create different eyebrow shapes.

Even subtle variations in the brows had a significant effect on how the woman’s mood was perceived. Here is how you can pluck the perfect eye-brows:

There are three different kinds of eye sets: normal, close and wide set. Eye set is recognized by measuring your eye from the inner to outer corner.

If your eye measurement is the same as the distance between your eyes that means you have normal set eyes and your brows should start in the inner eye.

If distance is more, then you have wide set eyes and they should start from further in.

If the distance is less, then you have close set eyes and your brows should start a little past the inner eye.

Angle the straight edge so that it lines up with the outermost edge of your nose and the outermost edge of your iris. You should look straight ahead — both your face and your eyes should be looking directly forward at the mirror. Wherever the line intersects your eyebrow is where the peak of your arch should begin.

Angle the straight edge further so that it touches the outermost edge of your nose and also passes along the outermost edge of your eye.

Use an eye pencil to draw a line along the bottom edge of your brow; it should be above any stray hairs and it should follow the natural shape of your brow’s top line, which may be angled, slightly curved, or even straight. Pluck the strays below the line. Your eyebrow should be between ¼ and ½ inches at their thickest.

The arch should peak above the outer rim of your iris and lie right on your eyebrow bone: Mark the point with your eye pencil and then remove hair along the bottom, from your inner brow point to the peak point, says After the peak, shape the tail. Make it slightly thinner than the main part of your brow, tapering at the end.
