Health Benefits Of Honey

honey

1. Prevent cancer and heart disease:
Honey contains flavonoids, antioxidants which help reduce the risk of some cancers and heart disease.

2. Reduce ulcers and other gastrointestinal disorders.
Recent research shows that honey treatment may help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis. This may be related to the 3rd benefit…

3. Anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-fungal:
“All honey is antibacterial, because the bees add an enzyme that makes hydrogen peroxide,” said Peter Molan, director of the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand.

4. Increase athletic performance.
Ancient Olympic athletes would eat honey and dried figs to enhance their performance. This has now been verified with modern studies, showing that it is superior in maintaining glycogen levels and improving recovery time than other sweeteners.

5. Reduce cough and throat irritation:
Honey helps with coughs, particularly buckwheat honey. In a study of 110 children, a single dose of buckwheat honey was just as effective as a single dose of dextromethorphan in relieving nocturnal cough and allowing proper sleep.

6. Balance the 5 elements:
Honey has been used in ayurvedic medicine in India for at least 4000 years and is considered to affect all three of the body’s primitive material imbalances positively. It is also said to be useful useful in improving eyesight, weight loss, curing impotence and premature ejaculation, urinary tract disorders, bronchial asthma, diarrhea, and nausea.

Honey is referred as “Yogavahi” since it has a quality of penetrating the deepest tissues of the body. When honey is used with other herbal preparations, it enhances the medicinal qualities of those preparations and also helps them to reach the deeper tissues.

7. Blood sugar regulation:
Even though honey contains simple sugars, it is NOT the same as white sugar or artificial sweeteners. Its exact combination of fructose and glucose actually helps the body regulate blood sugar levels. Some honeys have a low hypoglycemic index, so they don’t jolt your blood sugar. (Watch this video Sweetener Comparison where I compare stevia, brown rice syrup, honey, molasses and agave, and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each.)

8. Heal wounds and burns:
External application of honey has been shown to be as effective as conventional treatment with silver sulfadiazene. It is speculated that the drying effect of the simple sugars and honey’s anti-bacterial nature combine to create this effect.

9. Probiotic:
Some varieties of honey possess large amounts of friendly bacteria. This includes up to 6 species of lactobacilli and 4 species of bifidobacteria. This may explain many of the “mysterious therapeutic properties of honey.”

10. Beautiful skin:
Its anti-bacterial qualities are particularly useful for the skin, and, when used with the other ingredients, can also be moisturizing and nourishing! For a powerful home beauty treatment for which you probably have all the ingredients in your kitchen already, read Carrot Face Mask.

Different honeys have different flavonoid profiles, depending on the floral source of the nectar.

Types of Honey (most popular)

Alfalfa
Blueberry
Buckwheat
Clover
Manuka
Orange Blossom
Wildflower
There are at least 40 types – each one has distinctive taste and unique properties.
Darker honey tends to have higher antioxidant levels.
Monofloral honey (honey from a single plant species) usually has the lowest glycemic index (GI). For example, locust honey from the Black Locust tree has a GI of 32. Clover honey, which is used commercially, has the highest glycemic index at 69.

Honey Suggestions:

If you want to get the goodness from your honey, make sure it is pure and raw.
Raw honey contains vitamins, minerals and enzymes not present in refined honey.

Honey Cautions:

Best not to feed to infants. Spores of Clostridium botulinum have been found in a small percentage of honey in North America. This is not dangerous to adults and older children, but infants can have a serious reaction of illness in the first year. Do not add honey to baby food or use as a soother to quiet a fussy or colicky baby. Most Canadian honey is not contaminated with the bacteria causing infant botulism, but it’s still best not to take the chance.
Honey is a sugar, so do not eat jars full of it if you value your good health and want to maintain a healthy weight. It has a high caloric value and will put you on a sugar high and low.
To cook with honey or not: There is some controversy about cooking with honey, although I cannot substantiate it from all of my research about honey.

“…when honey is heated above 108 degrees Fahrenheit, it becomes transformed into a glue-like substance that is extremely difficult to digest. This substance is considered a toxin (ama), since it adheres to the tissues of the body and is very difficult to remove.” (quote from the Ayurveda Wellness Center)

That said, I am not convinced that we should not cook with honey, although I am not using it in most of my cooked recipes until I get to the bottom of this

Vitamin C Beauty Benefits

Improves Skin Tone and can Repair Skin Damage

While you’ve likely been focusing on getting all of your  vitamins via your nutrition, the good news is vitamins are also beneficial to  your skin through skin care products! One of the most popular vitamin additions  to skin care products is Vitamin C. This anti aging vitamin has been studied  and confirmed as being an extremely effective addition to skin care routines.  When antioxidant Vitamin C is added to your skin, it helps your skin get rid of  free radicals. Since free radicals can greatly damage your skin, the use of  Vitamin C is vital to your skin health! In addition, Vitamin C can help your  body rev up its production of collagen.

Beauty Benefits of  Vitamin C

On a beauty note, adding Vitamin C to your skin care routine  can help you look great on many levels. The topical use of Vitamin C  revitalizes your skin, allowing for improvement in the tone and texture! You  will instantly look younger with smooth and silky skin on your face and body. It  works to protect you against UVB rays and can help you combat sun damage,  wrinkles and photodamage. These are some of the most common skin worries of  women today.

Effective Topical  Products with Vitamin C For Skin Care

Cosmetic gurus and their sources are taking note of the  power behind Vitamin C and are adding it and its derivatives to many products  on the market. Derivatives like ascorbyl palmitate and ascorbic acid are  commonly used, because they are less irritating than Vitamin C itself. Those  with sensitive skin can still reap the protection and natural benefits of  Vitamin C, without any irritation.

Beneficial Vitamin C  in Cosmetics

When you start your venture for Vitamin C induced skin care  products, there are a few things to remember. First, remember there are many  claims being made from various companies on their skin care products. To find  the best products with Vitamin C, be sure to look at the color of the product.  Those products with a yellow or brown tint should be avoided. Vitamin C often  turns these colors when exposed to air and thus becomes ineffective in creating  collagen and elastic.

Vitamin C Offers  Cosmetic Benefits

Many women would rather sit through a chemical peel or a  microdermabrasion session for skin care repair and conditioning. However, using  a daily Vitamin C product can help you repair and prep your skin everyday. You  can get products which include Vitamin C derivatives (L-ascorbic acid and  others) for use at home. Therefore, you can continuously reap the benefits of  Vitamin C, without heading to the spa.

How To Control And Prevent Oily Skin

Finding the best cure for oily skin can really be expensive and frustrating, and this condition is usually accompanied by other skin problems such as blackheads , clogged pores, whiteheads and pimples.

It’s a fact that there’s no real cure for oily skin, only control. And the only way for you to deal with it effectively is for you to understand its causes.

Some Reasons Why Your Skin Gets Overly Oily

  1. Genes. This skin type usually runs in the blood and can be passed on from parent to child. Either one or both parents will have this skin type. But this doesn’t mean that you have to give up and that there’s nothing you can do about it. There is still hope. A good skin care routine will help to keep your oily face in check, and keep this annoying problem under control.
  2. Hormones. Hormonal imbalance is the invisible trigger that signals to your oil glands to produce more sebum. When too much of the hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is first released during puberty, a lot more oil is produced which normally causes acne. DHT also appears to be high during a woman’s monthly period cycle and also during pregnancy and menopause, causing the skin to be more vulnerable to clogging and pimple infection.
  3. Diet. Even if most experts say that food doesn’t have a scientific connection to having acne or oily skin, still, a lot of people testify that they experience otherwise. You are what you eat! Filling your body with  foods that are fried and greasy, sweet and salty treats, too much red meat, saturated and hydrogenated oils and dairy products can and may result to bad and greasy skin. If your body cannot effectively break down the oil, chances are that it’s going to be released through your pores.
  4. Climate & Weather. Summers are usually the worst time for people with oily skin. Pores seem larger and the face becomes greasier because of sweat and high humidity.
  5. Cosmetics. Ingredients and chemicals (such as mineral oil and harsh soaps) found in most cosmetic products can be too hard on your skin. These irritants can cause  your skin to produce more oil and can also clog your pores. This is why using specially formulated makeup products for oily skin is preferred.
  6. Stress can also take its toll on your skin and hormones, resulting in an overly greasy complexion. So does an unhealthy lifestyle.

How To Control Oily Skin

  1. It begins first with good skin care. If hyperactive sebaceous glands are in your genes, you have to accept just it and resolve to taking better care of your skin to prevent this condition from getting worse. It all begins at home with 3 simple steps – cleanse, tone, moisturize. Remember that your face needs some exfoliating once or twice a week too.
  2. Change your lifestyle. Vices, sleeping late, lack of exercise and stress, especially, can greatly affect your hormones that cause oil glands to work overtime. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle will help keep your entire body in better balance, causing your endocrine system to function better too. Include simple exercises to your routine and make sure you get sufficient sleep daily. People who sleep more overall have better and smoother complexions, less oil and less visible pores.
  3. Relax and treat yourself! Below are some quick Bath oil – 4 drops of chamomile oil, 1 drop of geranium oil and rose petals should make for a relaxing, warm bath.
  4. Eat right and drink more fluids throughout the day.Load up on fresh fruits and vegetables, foods high in protein and fiber, antioxidants, Vitamin B2, Vitamin E and Vitamin C. These foods benefit your skin by increasing its immunity, normalize stress levels, stimulate blood circulation and encourage fast healing and new cell reproduction.Drinking lots of water also flushes out toxins in your body and prevents dry skin. When your skin is dehydrated, your sebaceous glands will kick in to protect it from moisture loss.
  5. Cleansing and refreshing your skin. Keep a clean face all the time by washing with alcohol-free facial cleansers and by avoiding harsh soaps that can irritate your skin. You can make a really great natural face refresher out of some lemon juice, cucumber juice, witch hazel and water mixed in a squirt bottle. Keep this cold mix in the fridge together with your other skincare products for a cooling effect once you apply them.
  6. Wear less makeup and use oil-free or powder-based cosmetics in general. This will help to prevent that shiny complexion and will also aid in the prevention of clogged pores. Use a good sunscreen when you’re outdoors to prevent sun damage, but choose a sunscreen with SPF 30+ (there’s even SPF 50+ these days). Try a few different product till you find a light sunscreen that won’t irritate your skin and won’t feel too greasy on your face.

Natural Remedies To Try:

  • Facial cleanser – mix 2 tbsp of milk with 2 drops of lavender or sandalwood oil. Use this to wash your face. Rinse well with lukewarm water.
  • Do-it-yourself Facial Scrub Treatments – lemon juice, 1 tbsp of rice powder and corn flour – the rice powder is a natural exfoliant that leaves the skin shine-free and radiant, while the lemon adds a refreshing scent and acts as a brightening agent for dark spots and acne marks. Avoid use if you have sensitive skin.
  • Home-made Facial Masks – This is great for those of you who want to reduce shiny complexions. Make a paste out of water, 2 tbsp green clay, 1 tbsp each of honey and yogurt, plus two drops each of lemon juice and lavender oil. Put it on the same way you use a facial mask. Allow it to dry and suck up excess oil and dirt from your face then rinse with tepid water.

By using some of these natural oily skin remedies and tips, you can make a big difference in the way you feel and look.

6 Eye Makeup Tips to Make Small Eyes Appear Larger and More Open

eyes

Chances are if you’re like most other women, you’ve always  wanted larger eyes. While we can’t change our genetic make up, the good news is  we can create the illusion of larger eyes with eye makeup tricks and tips. In  fact, if you’ve ever noticed a celebrity photographed without makeup you most  likely have noticed how much smaller their eyes look than their photos where  they are all dressed up and made over for most red carpet events.

Make Eyes Appear Larger With These Simple Makeup Tips

  1. Curl Your Lashes– One of the easiest secrets to utilizing eye makeup routine to correctly make your eyes look larger is to curl your eyelashes. It’s important you curl your lashes BEFORE you apply the mascara! If you forget to do it before applying your dark mascara, be sure to wait until the mascara has dried completely and then go ahead and curl them.
  2. If you find throughout the day your lashes aren’t as curled as they were in the morning when you first applied your makeup, you can always re-curl them later in the day since your mascara will be very dry by then.
  3. Apply Mascara on Your Bottom Lashes– Many women think they don’t need mascara on their bottom eye lashes. However, most makeup experts believe adding mascara to the lower lashes can help to enlarge their appearance. The trick is to know how much to use on those bottom lashes! Start by applying the mascara to the top lashes. Then, with whatever is left on your brush (without redipping it into the mascara formula), apply it to the lower lashes. Hold your brush vertically and  sweep it back and forth over the lower lashes to get the right look.
  4. False Lashes for Evening– If you want to go for a dramatic dark night time effect, you may want to try your hand at false lashes. Most celebrities do use false lashes for big events. If you know how to do the lash application properly, they can be beautiful and natural. Many larger department stores can help you learn how to apply lashes at one of their cosmetics and beauty products counters but they are also available at drugstores. Be sure to practice before your big event. You can also remember to use scissors to trim them (before applying them)if they are too long.
  5. Use White Eye Liner in the Right Places– Another technique to use involves the creamy white eye liner pencil. This can help you get a doe-eyed style that will brighten and widen your eye appearance. To get this look, simply line the lower inside of your lids with the creamy white eye       pencil.  Make sure to use a soft pencil to lessen the irritaion on your lid. You can find great liners from Sephora, Loreal or Estee Lauder. To further brighten your eye area, use this soft color also on the inside corner of both the upper and lower lids.
  6. Apply Highlight Eye Shadow– If you don’t like the idea of the white shade of liner, you can also use a platinum highlighter to open up the eye area. Simply apply your shadow as usual and then use the highlighter on small dots along your browbone just below your eyebrow. Blend it in with the shadow in that area, apply it to the inner corners of the eyes and enjoy your new look.
  7. Keep Eye Brows Plucked & Well Shaped – For larger appearing eyes, you must also pay attention to your brows. Be sure you manicure them well. It’s a great idea to visit a professional to get your brows waxed, tweezed or threaded. A pro can help you shape them properly. In between pro visits you can maintain them by tweezing. If you have a slight arch to your brows, you will find your eyes look larger.

Shape your Eyebrows Like a Professional

Locate Your Starting Points

Flip your tweezer (try Tweezerman Slant tweezer, $20, tweezerman.com) upside down so the open end is pointing downward, and place it vertically alongside the outer edge of the bottom of your nose. The point where the vertex lands marks the beginning of your brow (which should also be about one inch above the inner corner of your eye). Using an eye pencil, draw a vertical line to demarcate the start of each brow, then check that the space above the bridge of your nose is centered between them. Remove the strays that fall in between.

1. Brush your brows upward, then use brow scissors to snip just the very ends of any long hairs and repeat brushing downward, says eyebrow pro Lashundra. Trimming the hair before tweezing will reveal the brow shape and remove the weight and bulk so that you can create an ideal shape.

2. Begin by holding a pencil parallel to the side of the bridge of your nose. The inner edge of your brows should start here. To determine the highest point of your arch, place the pencil parallel to the outside corner of your iris. Angling the pencil diagonally from your nostril to the outside corner of your eye will tell you where your brow should end. Another foolproof way to locate your arch: “Look at your face straight on in the mirror and find the highest point of your brow. Tweeze directly below it for a perfectly placed arch,” says Shun.

3. Mark the spots you just mapped out with a brow pencil, then begin tweezing or waxing accordingly. Remove no more than two rows of hair to maintain a natural effect. You may also need to remove just a few hairs from the top of the outer edges to create a subtle downward slope. If you have thick brows and want a more dramatic arch, remove an additional row from under the peak of the brow to create a more pronounced arch and to keep it from appearing straight and flat.

The shape of your eyebrows might be communicating a false message about what you’re feeling. In a study, researchers digitally altered a photo of a woman’s face to create different eyebrow shapes.

Even subtle variations in the brows had a significant effect on how the woman’s mood was perceived. Here is how you can pluck the perfect eye-brows:

There are three different kinds of eye sets: normal, close and wide set. Eye set is recognized by measuring your eye from the inner to outer corner.

If your eye measurement is the same as the distance between your eyes that means you have normal set eyes and your brows should start in the inner eye.

If distance is more, then you have wide set eyes and they should start from further in.

If the distance is less, then you have close set eyes and your brows should start a little past the inner eye.

Angle the straight edge so that it lines up with the outermost edge of your nose and the outermost edge of your iris. You should look straight ahead — both your face and your eyes should be looking directly forward at the mirror. Wherever the line intersects your eyebrow is where the peak of your arch should begin.

Angle the straight edge further so that it touches the outermost edge of your nose and also passes along the outermost edge of your eye.

Use an eye pencil to draw a line along the bottom edge of your brow; it should be above any stray hairs and it should follow the natural shape of your brow’s top line, which may be angled, slightly curved, or even straight. Pluck the strays below the line. Your eyebrow should be between ¼ and ½ inches at their thickest.

The arch should peak above the outer rim of your iris and lie right on your eyebrow bone: Mark the point with your eye pencil and then remove hair along the bottom, from your inner brow point to the peak point, says http://www.facesbyshun.com After the peak, shape the tail. Make it slightly thinner than the main part of your brow, tapering at the end.

How To Become A Makeup Artist Without Schooling

Makeup artists are not created overnight but need time and opportunities to develop their skills. They are not required to go to school or be licensed to practice their trade in most states. However, enrolling in a cosmetology school with a makeup program can help the makeup artist gain basic skills and techniques. Perfecting makeup skills and building a clientele is up to the individual, and the ways to achieve that are as varied as the colors a makeup artist has at their disposal.

Instructions

Learning Skills
1

Enroll in a cosmetology school that teaches makeup application. Look for schools with instructors working in the commercial makeup industry to obtain current knowledge about makeup technique and products. Adding a certification from a licensed cosmetology school to your resume could put you ahead of others without certification when vying for jobs.

2

Study the techniques of successful makeup artists. Staying informed about new trends in the world of celebrities and modeling can inform your own makeup skills. When you see an application you are inspired by, track down the makeup artist who applied it and follow their work to learn more.

3

Volunteer your services. Few makeup artists earn money for their services until they develop a reputation, and volunteering your services is a way to let others know you are skilled as a makeup artist. Many build a customer base by working for free or low wages for small film and television production companies, student films, budding photographers or local organizations putting on events such as fashion shows or theater performances.

4

Practice on friends and family. Practice new techniques and try new tools on your friends and family members before introducing new ideas to customers. Give your friends and family business cards so they can recommend you to others.

Ways to Advance
5

Specialize your skills. Take courses and classes about special makeup skills such as special effects, corrective or permanent makeup. Makeup artists with specialties broaden their earning potential. Look for classes from product manufacturers and professional makeup artists working in specialty fields.

6

Train with a makeup manufacturer. Becoming certified as a professional using a particular makeup brand can help build your clientele. Loyal customers to certain makeup brands provide a built-in customer base. Contact makeup manufacturers to learn about their training and certification programs.

7

Work as an assistant to a makeup designer. Makeup designers work for fashion designers, photographers and film and television production companies. Working under their direction can help you learn more about the many ways makeup is used to convey emotion, represent an era and support an actor. Makeup designers usually have assistants and senior makeup designers working for them.

What to Expect
8

Obtain a cosmetology license from your state cosmetology board. Although makeup artists do not need licenses, having a general cosmetology license may be necessary to work in a spa or salon as the resident makeup professional. Licenses usually require an education in a state approved cosmetology school, passing a state cosmetology exam and paying a licensing fee.

9

Work long hours. Because makeup is needed before a scene can be filmed, makeup artists working in television and film must show up for early calls to set and work late nights. At the beginning of your career, you may be working in cramped quarters and uncomfortable conditions for no pay. You will need to be innovative and flexible to earn a good reputation.

10

Provide your own makeup and follow direction. Makeup artists typically provide their own makeup and tools. They are often told what look to create and what colors they can and cannot use when working in movies or television. Owning a portable, lighted mirror may be necessary.

11

Work in other industries to make ends meet. Low or no pay does not mean you have to starve. Many makeup artists work other jobs while building their careers. Some in film and television also work as production or casting agent assistants. Jobs in the nightclub industry could put you in touch with people who need your makeup skills.
